Geology of the British Columbia Cordillera

How accreted terranes built British Columbia's mountains and why the Stikine, Quesnel, and Barkerville belts host world-class copper and gold endowments.

The Canadian Cordillera was assembled over hundreds of millions of years as a collage of crustal blocks, called terranes, accreted onto the western margin of ancient North America. Each terrane carries its own distinct geological history, and the boundaries between them are major structures that often localize mineralization.

This accretionary history is why British Columbia is so richly endowed: it stitches together multiple ancient volcanic arcs and ocean basins, each capable of hosting different deposit types.

The Stikine and Quesnel arcs

Two of the most important metallogenic belts are the Stikine Terrane (Stikinia) and the Quesnel Terrane (Quesnellia, including the Quesnel Trough). Both are remnants of Triassic-Jurassic volcanic arcs and host many of the province's porphyry copper-gold deposits.

Eastfield's Zymo project lies within the Stikine Terrane, while Indata sits within the Quesnel Trough — both classic porphyry settings. These belts demonstrate how arc magmatism creates the intrusions that drive porphyry and related epithermal systems.

Gold belts and ultramafic complexes

Beyond the porphyry arcs, the Barkerville Terrane of the Cariboo district hosts structurally controlled orogenic gold veins and more than a century of historic gold production. Elsewhere in the Quesnel Terrane, ultramafic complexes can carry copper-gold-PGE mineralization — the Iron Lake ultramafic complex, for example, hosts disseminated and massive-sulphide styles of mineralization.

This diversity — porphyry, epithermal, orogenic gold, and magmatic systems within one province — is a direct result of the Cordillera's varied terrane makeup.
